Frequently Asked Questions
The questions listed below are the most frequently asked questions about our Prenatal Ultrasound packages. Should you have any questions that are not answered below, send us an e-mail at roxana@peek-a-bump.com
What is an 3D/4D prenatal ultrasound? What is HD Live?
We are providing a live-motion 4D ultrasound experience to help establish a positive bond for parents with their unborn baby. We also provide keepsake video and baby photos. Research shows that realistic surface images provide a connection between the parents and baby that can be beneficial to the whole family.
GE’s HD live ultrasound technology uses a unique and moveable light source inside the probe that not only provides both 3D and 4D imaging, but “lights up” the baby, making it possible for soon-to-be-parents to see the facial expressions of their child, and even watch their baby yawn, wink and smile.
An HD live ultrasound provides impeccable views of your baby by providing better depth perception.
What is the difference between 2D, 3D & 4D?
2D images are the general black and white scans you receive at your doctor’s office. We always start out in 2D to get to 3D.
3D images are the sepia- colored, still pictures that you see on our website and on your USB 4D is a live version of the 3D pictures and is displayed on our TV during your exam. Recorded clips are saved onto your USB Drive.
Does this replace the ultrasound at my doctor’s office?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! Women seeking an elective prenatal ultrasound with Peek-a-Bump LLC must already be receiving prenatal care with a healthcare provider and have already undergone a medical, diagnostic ultrasound to confirm their due date, screen for fetal anomalies and to diagnose any other pregnancy related issues. We include a limited diagnostic scan to confirm the gender, number of babies, baby’s presentation, placental location and heart rate measure. Please note, at no time is this exam to be used in place of a complete diagnostic ultrasound. We will notify your doctor if we have any concerns during your exam, but the 3D ultrasound is a NON-DIAGNOSTIC NON-MEDICAL exam.
Is it safe? Are there any risks to me or my baby?
Extensive studies over 35 years have found that ultrasound has not been shown to cause any maternal or fetal harm. Routine diagnostic scanning of all pregnancies is now a normal procedure. 3D/4D scans use exactly the same type and intensity of ultrasonic waves as in conventional 2D scan.
Do I need an appointment for 3D sonogram?
Yes, appointments are necessary for all of our services.
How long does the 3D/4D prenatal ultrasound session take?
Depending on the package you choose, the session will last between 15 and 30 minutes. However, we will need 10 minutes for registration/eligibility. After the scan, about 10 minutes for printing pictures and formatting the USB.
When is the best time to get a 3D/4D ultrasound?
3D/4D/HD Ultrasound is performed ideally between 23-33 weeks. If you plan on having only one session, we recommend having the exam performed between 23 and 33 weeks. However, excellent images can be obtained from 14 to 36 weeks. Many mothers opt for our multiple exam package to see the baby’s growth from the second to the third trimester. For twins, we recommend scans before 28 weeks. Don’t forget to hydrate!! This makes a big differeance on the quality of pictures captured.
Will I always get beautiful 3D pregnancy pictures?
In most cases you will. Sometimes if the baby’s position is face down, i.e., towards your spine, it may be difficult to see the baby’s face. In this case, a complimentary re-scan will be scheduled. However, the scan images may not be similar to those you saw elsewhere or even from our center. Every baby scans differently, depending on the gestational age, position, amount of fluid, placental location and mother’s body size. However, we promise to make every effort to obtain the best images. *Re-scan is at the discretion of the tech.
Can I bring family and friends for the 3D/4D baby ultrasound session?
Yes! We encourage you to bring guests the exam. You are only limited by the number that will fit in the room. Your guest must be on time or join the in-progress session. Scans will not be repeated for latecomers. We want the exam to be a pleasurable and informative experience for the entire family, but because the scan can take up to 30 minutes, it may not be appropriate for small children who are easily distracted.
At how many weeks can I get my first ultrasound?
Our First Womb date package offers a peek at your baby from 8 weeks onward. 3D ultrasound can be done pretty much any time in pregnancy. We recommend coming in with a full bladder and avoid eating an hour before hand to help reduce intestinal shadowing over the uterus. No refund will be given for a less than optimal exam, each woman’s uterus shape and position can be different and there is no way to controll what is seen.
Can you determine the gender during 3D/4D baby ultrasound?
We can provide confirmation of your baby’s gender in almost all cases (if requested) starting at 15 weeks**. However, the baby can be uncooperative during the session and we may be unable to confirm gender. If so, we can schedule a complimentary scan for a later date. ** For better accuracy we recommend women over 200lbs wait until 16-17 weeks gestation.
Does insurance cover the 3D/4D pregnancy ultrasound procedure?
3D/4D ultrasounds are an out of pocket expense. 3D & 4D ultrasound for non-medical reasons are not paid by any insurance company. You can book your appointment and pay a deposit or pay in full.
